Rick arrived on Thursday while I was attending the Area One Act Play competition in Abilene (Benjamin advanced and Kamryn, along with the rest of them, did excellent!). I drove back home Thursday evening and arrived on Saturday. Toby has had some medical issues this week, and I needed to give him meds and keep an eye on him. Two weeks ago it was 95 degrees, last week was very cold with rain and area snow, and this week it made it to 100 degrees on Sunday!
We tackled the dreaded task of repairing the hardwood floors. In the distant past, the house had floor vents ducted in from a large floor furnace in the entry hall. The vents were long ago boarded over and the hardwood floors likely covered with carpet. To make the task extra challenging, each board width varies by about 1/16" to 3/16" (the replacement boards are a consistent width), making it extremely difficult to weave new boards in. Rick had a couple of very frustrating days on Thursday and Friday in the hallway and kitchen. He was able to complete the hallway repair and part of the kitchen repair. We switched to repairing the rest of the vents in the living room (2), 3rd bedroom (1), master bedroom (2), and 2nd bedroom (1) on Saturday and Sunday. Most of the vents are up close to the wall or near a corner and will probably not be visible, so we used a much less time-consuming fix. Weaving all of them in would have likely taken many weeks.
We were able to complete all of the vents except the one in the kitchen. We'll work on that next week, along with replacing a few more long boards in the kitchen that have old termite damage. We also need to stabilize the flooring on the northeast corner of the kitchen from under the house sometime. Once the floors are all finished, we'll be ready to sand them--most likely in two weeks. We're also going to be removing (before the floor is sanded) and replacing (after the floor is sanded) all door frames and doors in the bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets. That laundry room window is also still waiting, along with lots of other projects. Progress this weekend feels substantial.
