September 2, 2015

It was another great and extended trip to the mountains.  Rick was able to get away on Monday, August 24 to repair the hole in the deck, replace/paint eaves and work on finishing the bathroom remodel.  Vince, Amy and I came up on Thursday evening, and Dina & Shane joined us Friday afternoon.  The weather continued to be ideal with temps ranging from the low 50s to the 70s with some rain showers mixed in at times.  Unfortunately, the pool house burned down on Friday night from a lightning strike!

Vince, Amy and I rode some of the usual trails from Cloudcroft on Friday while Rick worked on finishing up projects.  We met Dina & Shane at the BBQ place late afternoon (we were the last customers of the day) for some great brisket.  Temps were a little cool that night from some rain showers so we had our first fire of the season.

On Saturday, Rickey, Vince and I finally decided to ride the Rim Trail south of town while Amy & Dina hiked the same trail a little farther down the road, and Shane worked from the cabin.  It turned out to be too muddy to ride comfortably and safely, so the ride was fairly short.   We shopped some, met at the Western Bar for a light lunch, and picked apples down at High Rolls.  We later went to the pizza place for what turned out to be our last pizza of the season as they decided to close earlier this year to work on the ski operation!  :(

Amy and Vince headed back on Sunday, but not before another great MTB ride from town and a trip to the Western Bar for some delicious green chile cheeseburgers.

We had the opportunity to get some firewood from our subdivision at a reasonable price without having to drive down to Alamogordo (and Rick's pickup and trailer were both available), so we got a trailer load on Monday morning with Dina and Shane's help and probably now have enough firewood for the winter.  We then drove to town, hiked the Osha Trail and had lunch at the BBQ place.

On Tuesday, Rick and I had to come back to Lubbock, so we got up early for a MTB ride in the James Ridge area on our favorite trails.  We saw elk in several places and even heard elk bugling on the back, remote areas.  It was an earlier and chillier start than usual but was a great last ride for the trip.  We had lunch at The Lodge with Dina and Shane before heading back to Lubbock.  Dina and Shane stayed one more night before returning to Dallas on Wednesday.

August 9, 2015

It was another great weekend in Cloudcroft.  The temps in Lubbock finally reached 100 degrees about the time we left on Thursday, and it was a cool 72 degrees when we arrived at the cabin and a chilly 67 degrees inside the cabin.  JD, Jill, Amy & Vince all arrived on Thursday night.

On Friday, we drove to town and rode the usual trails except Amy didn't drop off a car and was committed to climbing back up to town on the bike.  There are 4 options.  Three of these had been tried recently by various members of our groups, and not one of them had been popular with anyone other than Rick, Vince or me.  So we decided to do the 4th option--climb back up the singletrack.  Rick and I had done this once when we first started riding up here last spring.  It turned out to be a great option (as long as it's not too muddy).   Amy made it back to town, and the climb received good reviews from everyone.   We had a late lunch at the BBQ place, and it turns out later Friday afternoon is a great time to go because you don't have a long wait.

Everyone still felt like riding on Saturday, so we loaded up the bikes to ride in the James Ridge area.  Rickey, Vince and I started at the bottom of 16 Springs Canyon Road and Amy, JD and Jill drove up the the James Ridge Lookout and met us out on the trail.  We had another pleasant ride in perfect temperatures.  Amy and crew headed back to the car early for about a 10 mile ride, and Rickey, Vince and I rode on to pick up a few more miles and to ride our favorite trails, but some storms moved in and cut our ride a little short.  Afterward, we made a trip to the Western Bar for some Moose Drools then to the ski resort for our favorite pizza.

JD and Jill left Sunday morning, Amy hiked, and Rickey, Vince and I decided it was time to try the Rim Trail again. It's a very technical trail with some great views through a lot of different terrains with lots of rocks, roots, screaming descents, tough climbs, dense forest with ferns changing to rocky/sunny slopes, and areas with very narrow trails.  We were all having some difficulties keeping our balance on a particularly awkward and narrow section but were nearing the top when I lost my balance over the left side of the trail and crashed about 5-10 feet below.  Luckily I only got some scrapes and bruises and landed on a log with my bike falling on top of me.  They dragged me back up on the trail, and we continued on. It was a bit scary to say the least, but I'm ready to go back and explore the next section of trail!

July 26, 2015

We had another nice weekend at the cabin.  Randy and Sandra joined us on Thursday evening and Amy and Vince came up on Friday evening.

We received the call from the tree guy just as we were pulling into Cloud Country on Thursday night that he would be ready to take the tree down on Friday morning, but that we could not be in the cabin while they were working due to safety concerns.  We left our poor kitties in the cabin on Friday morning and drove to Cloudcroft with Randy and Sandra for a full day of mountain biking.  We arrived in town, got Sandra's MTB rented and set up at the bike store, and were preparing to leave when a storm developed overhead.  We took shelter in the bakery, ate some great pastries and were able to take off relatively quickly.  Sandra had not really mountain biked before, so we took it easy and rode the single track, the Switchback Trail, Bailey Canyon climb and La Luz Canyon climb.  On the Bailey Canyon ridge top, we hit rain and continued on until a very close lightning strike persuaded us to take a break on the ground for a while.  There were three close lightning strikes and some rain before the storm moved on, and we continued down the mountain.  We hadn't ridden far when we saw the first tree shattered by the lightning and a little farther down the road, we found a second tree which was blown apart all over the road.  It was more than a little scary to see what a lightning strike will do!  The storms cleared, and we finally made it back into town after a very long and muddy day of mountain biking.  We went back to the cabin to check on the tree, Amy and Vince arrived, and we had dinner at the Western Bar.

On Saturday, (Sandra and Randy had enough mountain biking the day before) Vince, Rick and I got ready and headed out to ride on James Ridge near our cabin.  We parked, looked at the clouds, checked the radar and saw major storms headed our way.  We then drove into town, met up the the others, shopped, tried to stay dry, waited, waited, ate lunch at the BBQ place, headed back to the cabin, waited...  Then the clouds cleared so we went out for a late afternoon ride with stomachs full of BBQ.  We survived, returned to the cabin to clean up, and drove to the pizza place for dinner.  The owner met us in the parking lot and said a class reunion had taken all of their dough, so no pizza!  We reluctantly went to Big Daddy's for an ok dinner.

Randy and Sandra took off Sunday morning, and Rick, Vince, Amy and I rode from Cloudcroft.  We did the usual Sunday ride and left Amy's car down in Bailey Canyon so she didn't have to do the brutal climb back into town.  We rode back up to Cloudcroft via the always challenging Old Cloudcroft Highway Trail for the first time in a while and had lunch at the pizza place before returning home.
