02-10-2011: Stain, day 2 (problems)

They started staining cabinets this morning. Everything was going great until this afternoon when they went back to the paint store to pick up another gallon for the last of the kitchen cabinets and the doors/drawers. It seems that a local high school had just been in and bought all 60 remaining gallons of the base stain we needed from all of the stores in town. It will now be Monday before the stain is back in stock. They would have finished tomorrow. Now it will be Tuesday or Wednesday. What really sucks is that I'm really not that thrilled with how it looks. I just hope that they can even things up a lot and that the lacquer will tone it down a bit. It's actually quite a bit darker than it looks in these pictures.

Rick is almost finished with the tub area and has been working a little on caulking drawers and trim. He'll probably start working on the stairs very soon.

The paint is on hold until the cabinets are finished and the paper is removed. If these cabinets turn out as dark as they look now, we'll have to go lighter on the paint colors.

02-09-2011: Stain, day 1 (prep)

The staining crew showed up today! They have everything cleaned, prepped and ready to stain tomorrow. Rick is working on the tub area in the master bathroom.

The paint samples didn't exactly work out like we thought. We're trying to decide how much of it is a poor mixing job at the store and how much is the actual color.

02-06-2011: Paint, stain and granite selected

This is really a terrible picture because the colors don't show up right and the light is glaring on the wood samples, but the point is that we have decided on paint and stain colors.  There could be a minor change on the wall paint to a slightly lighter color, but I think the rest is set.  We are using Pittsburgh Paint: walls-Rock Cliffs (ATC-94), trim & cabinets-Summer Wheat (ATC-87) [on the bottom row to the right of the following color chart: http://www.ppgpittsburghpaints.com/our_colors/interactive-palette.htm].  The kitchen stain is a custom blend at Sherwin Williams. 

Oh yeah, the granite has been chosen for quite some time--Yellow River.  These are some pictures I took back in October of some slabs of Yellow River at a local warehouse.  Once again, the color is terrible, and there is a lot of variation between slabs. 

02-05-2011: Drawers finished

Rick has finished the drawers and installed most of the doors in the bathrooms, master closet and utility room.  I wanted pictures with all of the drawers in their places, but he hasn't yet caulked all of them.  We are researching paint colors at open houses this afternoon armed with a huge array of paint sample cards, but I think we've already decided which colors to use.  

We also have to go back to a different paint store to do more research on stain colors.  The contractors will start on the kitchen cabinets, bar, beam, doors, etc. on Tuesday or Wednesday.

It's finally a balmy 42 degrees out today with sun and a west wind, but we now have more snow in the forecast for tonight, tomorrow and next week.

02-02-2011: more drawers, cold!!

 

Rick is still building drawers for the master closet, bathrooms, and utility room.  I think he had something like 32 drawers to build and is getting close to having them finished.  He then has to install doors and drawer fronts, put up a little more crown molding in the basement, and do just a little more caulking, and it will be ready to paint.  We have talked to some contractors about staining and sealing the kitchen cabinets, etc. but still haven't decided which one to use.  We may get another bid.  It doesn't look like this is going to be finished (or even started) this week. 

It has been terribly cold this week!  The high this afternoon was officially 14 (more like 10 or 11 out here) with snow and a wind chill of much lower than that.  The low at our house last night was 1.2 degrees, and the low tonight is predicted to be -2 to 0 degrees.  We won't go back above freezing until Friday afternoon.  I made a trip to the paint store in the ice and snow this morning at 7:45 to get paint samples, so we can make a decision on paint colors before next week.
