Building the shop--week 6

This is where we started on Saturday. We worked a lot this week at night! Monday-we put up the 14x14 foot roll-up garage door, Tues-end trim on all four corners, Wed-east gutters, Thurs-west gutters, Friday-rivets in gutters.

The forecast for the weekend was initially great, but then questionable for sheeting the roof. Walt was able to come back out to help again, so we were determined to finish the roof this weekend. Saturday was perfect (contrary to the forecast), and we finished 2/3 of the roof.

Sunday, the wind got a little gusty for the last few sheets, but we were able to get all of the sheets on the roof. We still lack some finishing on the edges and the end trim sheets, but will work on those during the week.

THANKS SO MUCH TO WALT AND RANDY FOR GIVING UP SO MANY WEEKENDS AND WEEKNIGHTS TO HELP US WITH THIS HUGE PROJECT!!

Building the shop--week 4 1/2 and 5

This is where we started on Thursday night. We had 40+mph winds on Wednesday and Thursday, but the winds were from the northwest and started to die down after work Thursday night. The forecast was for light winds Thursday night and Friday and another very windy weekend, so we decided to do as much as possible Thursday night and try to work half a day on Friday.

We got home at around 10:30pm Thursday night, but finished the east wall (except we were one sheet short).

Rick and I took Friday afternoon off work and started on the front. It was fairly slow due to all of the cuts around the doors, but Randy came out after work and helped. We didn't get home until almost 11pm, but we finished the front.

We had one sheet left on the southeast corner and had to go back to Wolfforth to pick it up on Saturday morning. We put the missing sheet on with help from the neighbors and called it a day.

On Sunday, we put in the remaining 5 skylights, taped some seams, and did some straightening up. It was very windy both days and getting cold on Sunday.

Building the shop--week 4

Monday, October 15: We finished the north wall tonight. There was no wind, and we got the 7 remaining sheets up in about 2 hours after work.
Sunday night, October 14: It was another windy weekend! Saturday was 91 degrees with 25-30 mph winds out of the south, so putting up sheets was impossible. We worked on the trim around the doors, put up base trim, etc.

The winds didn't start out too bad on Sunday (contrary to the weather forecast), but as the day went on, it got windier and windier. We finally gave up on the east side and moved everything to the north wall to take advantage of the windblock from the west wall for the southwest winds. We had to cut panels around the door and the roof sloping upward complicated the process. We worked until about 9pm with lights and finished about half of the east wall and half of the north wall.

Building the shop--week 3 1/2

We finished the west wall tonight. We only put 2 sheets up on Monday (6 feet), but Rick & I got 2 sheets up by ourselves before Randy arrived tonight. We put the final 3 sheets up just before dark (15 feet total today).

Building the shop-week 3

Saturday turned out to be a terrible day to work on the shop. Despite our best efforts, the winds (which started low but gusted over 30 mph once again) made it impossible to put up sheets and insulation. Walt went home, and Rickey, Randy, and I sat out in the dust all day and worked on the doors. It was a very frustrating and miserable day.

The forecast on Saturday night called for Sunday's wind to be about the same as Saturday's, so we held almost no hope of being able to start the sheeting this weekend. We were pleasantly surprised around 12:30-1:00 when the winds began to slow down at times. We called Walt and got started with the sheeting after 2:00. It went slowly at first--we were slowed by the skylights, but we picked up the pace and worked until dark. We finished 2/3 of the west side of the building.

Building the shop--week 2 (Sunday)

We finished the roof today and got the building squared up and most bolts tightened. The wind finally calmed down this afternoon.

Building the shop--week 2 (Saturday)

This is where we started today. Rickey, Randy and I had been out a couple of nights this week and put up the north end beams and put all of the side and top beams in place on the ground. The weather forecast said "breezy", and I guess you can call 30mph winds with dust in your face all day breezy. It was the perfect day to put the roof on the shop--not!

Walt and Randy helped out all day once again. We had a crane for about 2 1/2 hrs and made great progress. We hope to finish framing the top tomorrow.

Building the shop--week 1

The slab was poured on 9/6/07.
These 2 pictures were taken on 9/20/07 when the Mueller truck arrived and delivered the building materials.

Walt and Randy helped all day, and Jim helped set the four main columns. We had to brace everything well before leaving for the day.

Sunday, Sept. 23 -- We had hoped to bring in the crane on Sunday, but had winds of up to 30-35 mph and needed to do more structural work. Randy and Walt helped out again all day. We got a lot done this weekend!
