A herd of wild mustangs which crossed our path during the Friday MTB ride on James Ridge |
We had a nice holiday weekend at the cabin with Amy & Vince and Bobby & Donna. We all arrived around 7:30 pm MST on Thursday evening, unloaded the cars and headed to The Western Bar. It was crowded in the bar area for trivia night, so we had to eat in the restaurant area.
On Friday we decided to drive to the top of James Ridge to ride to avoid holiday traffic on Hwy 82 and to give Amy and Donna a break from the 6 mile climb. We found some reasonably untechnical to mildly/moderately technical roads for the 6 of us and rode around 10 miles before Amy & Donna had enough and drove back to the cabin. Rickey, Vince, Bobby and I then rode another 12 miles or so on our usual trails which were a bit muddier and slicker than usual due to heavy rains. We did some shopping in town and went to the pizza place at Ski Cloudcroft for late lunch/dinner where ran into Dina's friends Mike, Christina and Christina's dad from Dallas. We picked up a coconut cream pie from the Barn Door Restaurant on the way back to the cabin and watched a movie that night.
On Saturday (July 4th) Rick and I attended the annual meeting for Cloud Country, Vince and Bobby mountain biked near Cloudcroft and Amy & Donna hung out on the deck at the cabin. We all joined back up for lunch at the Cloud Country barn for some decent BBQ and potluck before Bobby and Donna packed up and headed back to Lubbock. We shopped, watched the July 4th parade in Cloudcroft between rain storms and had dinner at the Western Bar again.
Rickey, Vince, Amy and I all rode from Cloudcroft on Sunday, and Amy rode the single track and Switchback trails for the first time and did very well. We ate at Mountain Jacks BBQ after the ride. It was the third time we had eaten there. The first two times were excellent, but I would have to say that they are taking their BBQ to a different level. I have never eaten a better sliced brisket sandwich! We headed back to Lubbock around 5pm.
